AITA for Suing My Brother Over a Family Heirloom He Gave to His Fiancée?

Advice Needed

I grew up in a family where heirlooms hold significant value. One of the most cherished pieces is an antique diamond necklace that has been passed down for generations to the first daughter in each generation. Since I am the only daughter of my generation, it was always understood that the necklace would eventually be mine.

However, my brother claimed that our grandmother privately told him the necklace should go to him instead because he’s “the most responsible.” While I didn’t believe him, I didn’t want to cause drama, so I reluctantly let it go, though it felt deeply unfair.

Last week, I found out through social media that my brother had given the necklace to his fiancée as an engagement gift. She posted a picture wearing it with the caption, “Feeling like royalty with my new family heirloom.”

I confronted my brother about it, reminding him that the necklace was meant to stay within the family. He brushed me off, saying, “She’s family now. Don’t be petty.” When I demanded it back, he refused, claiming that doing so would ruin their engagement.

Feeling like I had no other option, I decided to take legal action to reclaim the necklace. This has caused an uproar. My brother is furious and accusing me of being selfish. My parents think I’m overreacting and should drop it, but some extended family members are supporting me, saying my brother never had the right to give the necklace away.

To make matters worse, his fiancée sent me a message calling me a “jealous drama queen” and told me to “find my own man to buy me jewelry.”

The feud has escalated to the point where my brother and his fiancée are now threatening to uninvite me from their wedding.

So, AITA for taking this matter to court to reclaim a family heirloom that was supposed to be mine?
