I Didn’t Seek This Revenge, You Asked For It…

As the title says, I only gave him what he asked for—and yes, it was definitely petty.

I was married to a very “manly man” for 17 years. In that time, I handled all the admin and mental load tasks. He had a job earning money, but I did literally everything else: scheduling his dental appointments, buying his parents’ birthday cards, and basically managing his life. At first, it seemed fine, but over time, it wasn’t sustainable. He refused to change, and eventually, our marriage ended. I’m pretty sure he was shocked to realize just how much “his assistant” had been doing after I left.

Fast forward five years: we’ve moved on, live our separate lives, and don’t talk. Suddenly, I start getting calls from him. He tells me he never removed me from his home and auto insurance and insists I need to call the company to fix it. Apparently, “they won’t remove you unless you call.” He’s rude, pushy, and keeps insisting I handle it right away. This man—who hasn’t spoken to me in years—says I’ve created a problem for him by not calling. Seriously?

After a week of this nonsense, I finally call the insurance company. The agent I speak with tells me, “No, we would’ve removed you if he had just asked. There’s no record of him ever calling.” Oh, really? Then she adds, “You know, switching him from married to single will significantly raise his rate. Is he sure he wants this?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, he’s very sure,” I said. “In fact, I haven’t lived there for five years, so his policy should probably be backdated.” The agent laughed with me and agreed, noting that he’d be receiving a very large bill.

Not my problem anymore.

Edit:

For those curious about specifics: I think the agent meant the backdating would only apply to the current policy year. I didn’t bother asking for details because, frankly, I don’t care—that wasn’t why I called. Also, for those wondering, yes, he’s under 40, and that might play into why his rate hike is significant. Again, not something I gave much thought to.

Oh, and to those speculating about his possible new girlfriend being upset: you’re probably right. 😉
