My Deaf Sister Was Shoved at the MRT Station

For context, I (22F) have a deaf-mute sister (43F) who works as an executive pastry chef at a well-known Japanese dessert shop. We live in northern QC, while she works in Makati. She relies on the MRT for transportation as it’s the most efficient way to avoid the endless gridlock on EDSA.

Yesterday morning, while at the North Avenue MRT station on her way to work, my sister was shoved while exiting the elevator. The culprit? A medium-built woman in her 40s who was apparently pissed because my sister bypassed her by walking quickly during rush hour. This woman shoved my sister so hard that she fell to her knees.

Everyone nearby witnessed what happened. Despite being in pain and understandably furious, my sister calmly showed her PWD card and confronted the woman, asking why she had pushed her. Thankfully, MRT security guards intervened immediately. They stopped the woman and took down her details while bystanders supported my sister and confirmed what they had seen.

The woman, desperate to justify her behavior, accused my sister of being a pickpocket—that’s why she claimed she shoved her. However, the crowd wasn’t having it. People were rightfully angry and shamed her for her actions.

My sister told me this wasn’t an isolated incident. She’s seen elderly individuals being shoved at the MRT simply for walking slowly.

I’m sharing this to raise awareness of the kind of hostility that still exists in public spaces and to remind people to stand up against such behavior. Actions have consequences, and I hope this serves as a warning to those who think they can get away with being awful.

Frankly, the woman is lucky I wasn’t there—I wouldn’t have hesitated to stand up for my sister. But rest assured, this isn’t over. I’m determined to track her down and file a case against her.

To my fellow commuters: please be vigilant and kind. And to the deaf community, know that your stories and experiences deserve to be heard.
